The animated film ‘The Magic Kimono’ is part of the artistic output of our Thursday Group. The V&A Museum closed due to Covid-19 one day before we were due to use our tickets for the exhibition ‘Kimono, Kyoto to Catwalk’. Consequently, we decided to design our own silk kimonos (and scarves produced in China) based on the group’s images from the museum websites, including the virtual kimono exhibition at the V&A. Our kimono’s ‘circle of life’ motif and our experiences with animals inspired the Magic Kimono mythology. The film uses the group’s images, drawn at home, and stories and experiences shared during online workshops which formed the basis for the narrative and soundtrack. It also includes some narration in Yoruba, reflecting the diverse influences on our work. An online premiere of the film took place on Thursday 6th August attended by everyone who had a hand in producing the film together with some friends and family. As is traditional at such event, those attending were invited to dress-up, either in national costume or black tie. It was also followed by an awards ceremony for the best contribution to the film. Please click on the link below to view the film. We hope you enjoy it.
